Sabhiya Kaccṅna was staying at āṅtika in the Brick Hall. Then Vacchagotta the wanderer went to him and, on arrival, exchanged courteous greetings with him. After an exchange of friendly greetings & courtesies, he sat to one side. As he was sitting there, he said to Ven. Sabhiya Kaccṅna, "Now then, Master Kaccṅna, does the Tathṅgata exist after death?" "Vaccha, that has not been declared by the Blessed One: ), # Right single quote ('â', The Tathṅgata exists after death.â" "Well then, Master Kaccṅna, does the Tathṅgata not exist after death?" "Vaccha, that too has not been declared by the Blessed One: ), # Right single quote ('â', The Tathṅgata does not exist after death.â" "Then does the Tathṅgata both exist and not exist after death?" "That has not been declared by the Blessed One: ), # Right single quote ('â', The Tathṅgata both exists and does not exist after death.â" "Well then, does the Tathṅgata neither exist nor not exist after death?" "That too has not been declared by the Blessed One: ), # Right single quote ('â', The Tathṅgata neither exists nor does not exist after death.â" "Now, Master Kaccṅna, when asked if the Tathṅgata exists after death, you say, ), # Right single quote ('â', That has not been declared by the Blessed One: "The Tathṅgata exists after death."â When asked if the Tathṅgata does not exist after death, you say, ), # Right single quote ('â', That too has not been declared by the Blessed One: "The Tathṅgata does not exist after death."â When asked if the Tathṅgata both exists and does not exist after death, you say, ), # Right single quote ('â', That has not been declared by the Blessed One: "The Tathṅgata both exists and does not exist after death."â When asked if the Tathṅgata neither exists nor does not exist after death, you say, ), # Right single quote ('â', That too has not been declared by the Blessed One: "The Tathṅgata neither exists nor does not exist after death."â Now, what is the cause, what is the reason, why that has not been declared by the contemplative Gotama?" "Vaccha, whatever cause, whatever reason there would be for describing him as ), # Right single quote ('â', possessed of formâ or ), # Right single quote ('â', formlessâ or ), # Right single quote ('â', percipientâ or ), # Right single quote ('â', non-percipientâ or ), # Right single quote ('â', neither percipient nor non-percipientâ: If that cause, that reason, were to cease totally everywhere, totally in every way without remainder, then describing him by what means would one describe him as ), # Right single quote ('â', possessed of formâ or ), # Right single quote ('â', formlessâ or ), # Right single quote ('â', percipientâ or ), # Right single quote ('â', non-percipientâ or ), # Right single quote ('â', neither percipient nor non-percipientâ?" "How long has it been since you went forth, Master Kaccṅna?" "Not long, my friend. Three years."
