Sṅriputta and Ven. Mahṅ Koṭṭhita were staying near Vṅrṅṃasī in the Deer Park at Isipatana. Then Ven. Mahṅ Koṭṭhita, emerging from his seclusion in the evening, went to Ven. Sṅriputta and exchanged courteous greetings with him. After an exchange of friendly greetings & courtesies, he sat to one side. As he was sitting there, he said to Ven. Sṅriputta, "Now then, friend Sṅriputta, does the Tathṅgata exist after death?" "That, friend, has not been declared by the Blessed One: ), # Right single quote ('â', The Tathṅgata exists after death.â" "Well then, friend Sṅriputta, does the Tathṅgata not exist after death?" "Friend, that too has not been declared by the Blessed One: ), # Right single quote ('â', The Tathṅgata does not exist after death.â" "Then does the Tathṅgata both exist and not exist after death?" "That has not been declared by the Blessed One: ), # Right single quote ('â', The Tathṅgata both exists and does not exist after death.â" "Well then, does the Tathṅgata neither exist nor not exist after death?"
